Transfagarasan 2007

A few days ago we have made a classic circuit starting from Sibiu and traveling to Transfagarasan, Balea Lac, Vidraru Lake, Arges Monastery, Olt river and back home. Here you’ll find the first part of the trip, the Transfagarasan and the Balea Lac stops. When I’ll get a few hours of free time I’ll do the Vidraru lake with its power plant and the return to Sibiu. Unfortunately the Arges Monastery was cover with a wood and plastic framework for preservation / restoration so I could take only a few minutes of footage from the gardens (anyway the price to film in a dark church - nearly 3 Euro - was a little bit too high for my tastes - it’s not about money but about what you get for them). Until the second video is ready enjoy my first attempt…

Please note this video is my very first attempt to video production:

Harry Potter launch in Sibiu

…and it’s D day…

No much activity like in the previous years. In a few hours we’ll find out if the leak was real or was a PR thing only.

…still 90 minutes to go…

The book summary is in the press. One example here (in Romanian). It appears there will be something like a late launch in Sibiu also (tomorrow at Dacia Traiana bookstore, with 2 clowns).

…3 hours until the big moment…

In Sibiu there is no official launching party so there is only one way to participate to the “global” one: the internet. But it’s quiet after the book leaked 2 days ago… For the latest 2 books the activity was much higher but now it’s… quiet. Either the content is already know or the fans are older…

Hot days

Sibiu is melting in the past few days from the high temperatures. The airport weather station reports 35-36 degrees Celsius but in the town it is hotter, approaching 40 degrees. The concrete and asphalt is taking the Sun heat; you can feel it raising from the ground and wrapping around your body as deadly and invisible clothes. You have to drink a lot of liquids (water being the best) to have a chance to survive. For the pigeons in the Big Square it is easier - the water fountain it’s just a big pool were they can cool and wash…

For the humans it’s harder… there is no open air swimming pool in Sibiu… and they call it European Capital of Culture in 2007… too much culture but too less entertainment

Latest Harry Potter book

The launch for the latest Harry Potter book is scheduled for midnight, July 21st but… Antena3 (in Romanian), reports there was at least one case where a few books were distributed one week before the official launch date. And the today result is that the book is already on the internet, as photos (taken with a digital camera, hard to read but possible if you are a fan) and some pdf files.

More details can be found on the nytimes.com website (original news for antena3 article, also).

For the previous 2 books there was a small delay between the official launch and the book being available on the Internet (under one day). The latest one seems to be already available so it will be interesting to see what will happen on 21st, if the atmosphere will be the same as previously…

Double Rainbow in Sibiu

After several hot days the weather changed in Sibiu. The clouds, some showers, strong winds and low temperature were the characteristics of the day. In the afternoon there was a rain toward south east and the expected phenomenon is the rainbow. I was located between the rain and sun and saw a very strong one, doubled. A double rainbow is not a common sighting and occurs when raindrops high in the atmosphere refract and reflect light back to the viewer. For more explanations please see here. Below are the best snapshots.

PS. I’m not expert in working with pictures in the blog so don’t expect too much.

Google Talk by Douwe Osinga

Just found an interesting project related to Google. Enter a few words in the box below (3-4) and watch Google in action. The system will search for this sentence at Google, find the next word and print that. Then it will remove the first word of the search string, add the found word and repeat. The result seems to be meaningful sometimes. Other times it is giblish. But always fun.
